Shifting perceptions through challenge
Since 2008, Baltimore Outward Bound School has been carrying out a programme to change the perceptions between youth and police in the city. The innovative programme addresses the challenges some communities face while providing opportunities for youth and police to build meaningful relationships. A research study to prove the programme’s effectiveness by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health discovered undeniable truths about the shift in perceptions. Positive attitudes were strengthened and negative attitudes (such as youth believing officers were racist) dropped dramatically after the programme. The study also evaluated the programme’s effect on classroom behaviours for students, and specific life skill development. An impact report can be dowloaded here.
