Challenging young people
to care for themselves, others
and the world around them
Outward Bound Netherlands is an educational charity that uses nature as a metaphor for day-to-day life. We take young people out of their comfort zones and place them in challenging and unfamiliar settings. They experience a series of activities and exercises designed to instil self-confidence, creativity, accountability and compassion. Participants return with an improved sense of self, better social skills and an awareness of their place in the world.
“There exists within everyone a grand passion, an outlandish thirst for adventure, a desire to live boldly and vividly through the journey of life.”
Outward Bound was founded in 1941 by Lawrence Holt and Kurt Hahn as a school for merchant seamen. They taught young sailors the skills and attitude needed to survive catastrophe and shipwreck. After the war, Outward Bound developed an educational programme that promoted the principles of independence and self-awareness through outdoor learning experiences. Outward Bound Netherlands was established in 1964 at Renesse on the Zeeland coast. Today, we are the leading provider of experiential outdoor education in The Netherlands and a proud partner of Outward Bound International, a network of more than 40 Outward Bound schools spread around the globe.
“We are all better than we know. If only we can be brought to realise this, we may never again be prepared to settle for anything less.” – Kurt Hahn. Outward Bound Netherlands exists to turn these words into reality for an ever-increasing number of young people.
To unlock the potential in young people in the Netherlands through adventure and discovery, challenging them to care about themselves, others and the world around them.
