About Us

Experiential learning using the outdoors

Established in 1964, Outward Bound Netherlands is the leading provider of experiential education and learning in The Netherlands, offering transformational journeys that encourage participants to push their mental and physical limits, and discover their true potential.

Our methodology of experiential learning has been refined over more than 75 years, enabling us to work with people from both inside and outside of The Netherlands, to help them become more confident, more effective and more capable at school, college and in the workplace.

OUR CORE VALUES

We unlock the potential in young people through adventure and discovery, challenging them to care about themselves,
others and the world around them. We teach to and work by the following values:

ADVENTUROUS LEARNING

A belief in the power and intensity of learning through adventure in the outdoors – as a means of bringing out the best in our participants.

Transformational Change

A deep appreciation of the balance between risk, reward and responsibility. We facilitate authentic learning through purposeful and intense experiences with real consequences and powerful, positive and memorable outcomes.

RESPECT AND COMPASSION

We aim to stretch people both physically and mentally. In doing so we act with care, concern and generosity towards people and the natural environment.

OUR STORY

BE PART OF OUR RICH HISTORY

Outward Bound was founded in 1941 by the naval captain Laurence Holt, and the educationalist Kurt Hahn. At this time, Outward Bound provided training for young and inexperienced sailors who were drafted into the navy in World War II, helping them prepare for a tough life at sea, and showing them how to survive if they were shipwrecked. After the war it was felt that the courses offered by Outward Bound were valuable for society in general, and Outward Bound expanded rapidly around the world.

Today there are Outward Bound centres in more than 30 countries. The work of Outward Bound has never been as relevant as it is today, and each year some 250,000 people take part in an Outward Bound course somewhere in the world. In 1964, Outward Bound was launched in The Netherlands. Today, we are the leading provider of experiential outdoor education in The Netherlands.

THERE IS MORE TO US THAN WE KNOW. IF WE CAN BE MADE TO SEE IT, PERHAPS FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES WE WILL BE UNWILLING TO SETTLE FOR LESS
